In the San region of Mali, 191 women grow tens of thousands of kilograms of shallots and onions each year. Between 30 and 40% of that harvest rots before it is ever eaten, not because of drought or disease, but because there is nowhere to store it. This is not just a poverty problem. It is an environmental crisis.

Many low-income households in the Kumba ecosystem live at the intersection of livelihood insecurity, limited financial access, and unrealised economic potential. Their livelihoods often depend on petty trade, small-scale agriculture, and other informal activities, yet commercial banks remain largely inaccessible because these households lack income, formal credit histories, and collateral. When school fees, healthcare costs, business needs, or unexpected emergencies arise, families often run to informal moneylenders because they offer quick and accessible cash. However, the high interest rates charged can deepen indebtedness and reduce the very income households need to rebuild their livelihoods.

According to CARA (Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate at Georgetown University) about 25% of all parishes in the United States run financial deficits. In order to garner the funds necessary to survive, operate effectively, and fulfill their mission to continually build God’s kingdom on earth, many Catholic organizations are in need of running capital campaigns that hinge on effective communication with an audience of donors. When film/video content that employs known donor psychology principles (appeal to warm glow, emotional arousal, endorsement, direct storytelling, concreteness, etc.) is produced during a campaign, valuable capital can be garnered to enhance campaign progress and reach goals. Successful campaigns provide a specific beneficial impact to Catholic organizations with broad positive effects on the populations they serve.

Solving global problems that exist in the Global South such as poverty, world hunger and poor eduction is almost impossible due to geopolitical, cultural and economical challenges. But real social impact for increased wages, dignity of the worker, access to capital, can be achieved when people in the Global South are trained in how to solve global problems locally.

Most of our day goes to tasks that test our skills but ignore or even undermine the deeper parts of us that make us better, stronger human beings. We often become more efficient but less whole.
