How much should a new idea have to answer to lived experience and history, and when does that test turn into resistance to anything new?

History is a strong witness to what people are like but a weak witness to what arrangements are possible. Abolition and handwashing both contradicted long practice, and both were right. A new idea should answer to history strictly when it makes claims about human nature, and be given room when it proposes new arrangements. The test turns into resistance when it's applied to the arrangement instead of the assumption.
