A thinker sees an idea isn't working when the evidence reaches them quickly and personally. A teacher in the classroom knows within weeks, while a theorist far away may hear years later, through other people's reports. Whether they change course depends on what they've staked: the more their reputation rests on an idea, the harder it is to let it go.
