I think there are many things that are lost. Many of them are abstract, but I feel there are a few specific things are more objective. The first is physical health. I live in the United States where cities are mostly built for cars to travel through them and not people. I get it, cars are fast and efficient ways to push people through a space. However, this has resulted in walkable infrastructure being pushed to the wayside leading to an increase in sedentary lifestyles that are significantly detrimental to physical health and quality of life. The second thing we lose is connection. We lose the opportunity to meet others because there are very few nice places to gather, the roads are too dangerous for our children to play, and you are almost forced to travel in an isolated manner. This leads to a society that is demoralized, disconnected, and unhealthy.
